Garden Hotel, June 22, 13:30-17:30

Social Exchange Theory has been proposed as a useful theoretical framework for understanding many organizational phenomena such as the employment exchange relationship, leader-subordinate relationships, guanxi, psychological contracts, and negotiations. This workshop will begin with brief presentations of several empirical papers which have used social exchange theory and being considered for publication in the special issue titled ˇ§Social Exchange in Organizationsˇ¨ in Management and Organization Review. These presentations will be followed by a general discussion of social exchange theory as it may apply to additional aspects of the employment relationships in China. It is our hope that the workshop will inform participants of the viability of social exchange theory as an explanation of organizational phenomenon in general and more specially in China. In addition, we hope that the opportunity to discuss the results of the papers, other research of those attending the workshop, and specific challenges facing Chinese organizations and employees will stimulate future collaboration.
