The IACMR Newsletter is a bilingual newsletter, sponsored by
Beijing New Curves Co., Ltd, a subsidiary of China Posts and
Telecom Press, published by the International Association
for Chinese Management Research to facilitate the
communication between the association and its members as
well as to stimulate the dialogue among researchers in the
field of Chinese Management. It appears on a quarterly

The impact of the U.S. financial crisis has rippled across
the globe, prompting concerns about the growth of emerging
markets, the future for developing countries, the need for
enhanced regulation and a new global financial architecture.
The complex
interrelationships among economic events, technological
developments, monetary policy, social events, corporate
strategy, population trends and the regulatory environment
have created the conditions for a global crisis of
significant magnitude. |

| During these
challenging and uncertain times, the contributions of
management and management research in business and
organizations are paramount. The academic world is not
isolated from the world of practice. As the world struggles
with the new realities of this unprecedented financial
crisis, management researchers, students and practitioners
must pay attention to the role that academic theories may
play in the world developments. As we all know, the
scientist’s goal is to seek understanding, explanation and
prediction of a phenomenon so that the knowledge can be used
in a positive way to advance, change and influence future
practices. Some people criticize that no existing theories
have forecast this unprecedented crisis, and even worse,
that it is the economic and financial research on financial
derivatives that has led to the U.S. financial crisis. |

| The ICAMR
defines its responsibilities in the creation and
dissemination of knowledge about management in the Chinese
context to be a true reflection of the practical world and
its findings to be useful in the development of business
practices. In the continuing refinement of truth and
usefulness, knowledge created by science is tested and
retested, new theories are created and new data are used to
refute or confirm the initial theories. That is how
knowledge is updated, through ongoing scientific research
involving new theorizing and new observations. This crisis,
which represents an abnormality in practice, offers a
significant opportunity to examine, update existing
theories, and even create new theories to understand the
unusual and unexpected phenomena in financial and business
failures that we have observed in recent months. |

As the
financial crisis is eroding the world economy, the need to
understand, explain, and guide the operations and practices
of business management become more and more urgent. The key
role for researchers right now is in putting the economic
disorder in context. The most valuable insights are those
that provide a clue as to what has happened, why, how, and
what will happen next. In the pursuit of understanding,
academic researchers are often a source of fresh and
creative thinking. As we look at the evolving nature of
global business, academic researchers help to explain
objectively what is happening and the underlying causes. One
of things we can do now is to take the sizzle out of the
story and look at the fundamentals in this crisis. For
example, questions that are worthy of probing may include:
What in the crisis of organization and management is
unknowable? Is there a limit to reason in understanding
human behavior in organizations under crisis? Do we
understand the ethical dimensions of decision making? What
is the role of corporate social responsibility in time of
crisis? What could be a new business model that helps
companies survive such crisis? What can we learn about
development of management talent and executive compensation
systems? What factors influence a firm’s decision to operate
ethically in domestic markets and globally? How will this
global economic crisis affect globalization
of business? |

| Crisis can
mean challenge as well as opportunity! We should consider
the ways that our ongoing scholarly contributions might
shape or contribute to the solutions. In addition, our
teaching endeavors may influence future managers during the
downturn of the economy. As the crisis unfolds, some predict
the opportunity costs of leaving work to pursue advanced
education are lower, so that business schools may anticipate
an increase in applications. Some universities, such as
Harvard Business School, often report an increase in
applicants in periods of economic downturn over previous
years. Recently, universities in China including Nanjing
University have reported an increase in applications over
the same time period one year ago. So it is an opportunity
for universities to consider programs that will influence
the transfer of knowledge to students and practitioners of
management. |
危机意味着挑战,同时也蕴含着机会!我们应该考虑如何从学术上做出努力以及如何找出解决问题的方法。另外,在经济衰退时,从教学上也可能影响未来的管理者。正如此次危机所揭示的,有人预测离职追求高等教育的机会成本在降低,可以预期,商学院的申请人数将增加。有些院校,如哈佛商学院,经常报告过去经济衰退时期的申请人数有所增加。近期,包括南京大学在内的中国一些大学报告显示,与去年同期相比,申请进入商学院的人数也在增加。所以,对大学来说,这也是一个机会来考虑设置一些将对学生和管理实践者进行知识传播产生影响的项目。 |
| I am
confident that we can create and transfer knowledge while
advancing our research by solving critical problems in this
period of financial crisis. It is an important time to
acknowledge the importance of research and its potential for
a lasting contribution. That is why I suggest that this
crisis is not only a problem, but also an opportunity. I
strongly encourage our IACMR community to urgently and fully
integrate the economic crisis in the context of our ongoing
scholarly activities in research, teaching and service.
There are many important problems to be studied. Instead of
using the literature to guide us in the selection of
research questions, we have the great opportunity to
contribute to both theory and practice by addressing the
problems in the world of business and management practices
as they unveil in front of our eyes. |
我相信,通过解决此次金融危机的关键问题,我们能创造和传播知识,提高研究水平,这是认识研究的重要性及其持续贡献潜力的重要时刻。这就是为什么我认为此次危机既是问题,也是机会。我强烈鼓励我们学会成员尽快行动起来并且全力地将经济危机置于持续的研究、教学和服务等学术活动情境中,有许多重要问题亟待研究。与利用文献来指导我们选择研究问题不同,当商业和企业实践中的问题呈现在面前时,通过解决这些问题,我们就有了很好的机会同时对理论和实践做出贡献! |

On 11 February, 2009, Zhe Zhang, the Chinese editor of IACMR
newsletter interviewed Mr Jiangguo He, the founder and CEO
of Yaohua Electric Group in China , as part of the
newsletter’s newly established executive forum dedicated to
unlocking the mind of the practitioners and IACMR’s effort
to link research with the practical business world. Below is
an excerpt of the interview.

Zhe: Mr. He, would you please provide some company
background and tell us something about yourself?

He: Yaohua Electric Group Co., Ltd (CNYH), which was
founded in 1986, was registered as a non-region restricted
group authorized by State Administration for Industry &
Commerce. It has the registered capital of RMB 100 880 000,
employs 15 000 people, and the total sales were more than
RMB 3 800 000 000 in 2006. The company has more than 80
subsidiaries, 400 affiliated companies and 5 overseas'
subsidiaries.

| CNYH specializes in manufacturing industry' electric
apparatus, electrical transmission and transformation
machinery, automotive control series, farm machinery,
mechanical installation, machine tools, steel structure
building and real estate development. The major products of
CNYH are more than 200 series and 6000 specifications, such
as our low-voltage electric apparatus; machine tool electric
appliance control elements; complete high and low voltage
electric equipment; electric devices and meters, power
transmission and distribution equipment, ten patents of

| Since 2001, CNHY has been awarded as one of top 500
private enterprises for many years by the All-China
Federation of Industry and Commerce (ACFIC). It was 69th in
the top 500 Chinese private enterprises and 86th in the top
500 in Chinese machinery industry in 2002, and it was 102nd
in the top 500 Chinese private enterprises and 54th in the
top 100 Zhejiang enterprises in 2003. |

As the CEO and board chairman, I am also the vice board
chairman of Zhongrui Financial Group Co. Ltd, member of the
CPPCC Anhui Committee, chairman of the Zhejiang Chamber in
Anhui Province, vice president of the Association of
Zhejiang Electric Industry, member of the China Democratic
League Anhui committee, vice director of the Economy
Committee, member of the CPPCC Leqing Committee, executive
member of the Chamber and Commerce of All-China Federation
of Industry and Commerce, consultant of the Hefei People’s
Government, member of the China Machine Tool Industry
Technical Committee of Standardization.

Zhe: What is your view on the current management issues
and challenges facing Chinese private firms?

喆:您对目前企业管理和企业面临的挑战有何看法? |
| He: Chinese private enterprises are facing the same
management problems as other firms. The most critical one is
that these firms, established by shareholders of blood
relationships, are now hindered by intertwined blood
relations in their expansion decisions. |
何:在公司管理方面,中国民营企业遇到的问题相同。最为突出的是由于血缘型关系所组成的公司在公司发展壮大后严重影响公司的决策。 |
Private enterprises were initially funded by families,
friends or relatives. It is undeniable that blood
relationships allow shareholders to stick together in its
early stage, and such contribution enabled survival in the
start-up stage. However, as the firm grows, such
relationships become the source of discord, which influence
the company’s decisionmaking when the company expands. Also,
at the start-up stage, each shareholder is typically in
charge of one area, and their expertise is normally confined
to that area. Thus, they tend not to be generalists. As the
firm expands, the manager needs broader knowledge. Such a
limitation resulting from blood-relationship entrepreneurial
activity becomes a big obstacle to decision making.

民营企业创业初期由血缘型股份组成,股东投资者都是朋友或者亲戚。不可否认,创业初期,股东间的血缘关系使得股东间具有很强的凝聚力,对初期的发展贡献很大。但是,随着企业规模的扩大,血缘型的股东关系就会影响企业决策,成为不和谐因素。创业时期,由于各股东各自负责一部分工作,由于工作能力不全面,虽然在公司创业初期是专家,但不是“博士”。而企业在重大的决策过程中需要“博”,而不是“专”。这样血缘关系成为公司决策非常大的障碍。 |
Zhe: What do you think an organization like IACMR can do
for Chinese management?
| 喆:您认为像IACMR这样的组织能为中国管理提供哪些帮助? |
| He: Chinese management issues are so unique that there
are no standard formulas for them, and each case requires a
new approach. Management scholars tend to generate general
theories, which may be appropriate for new firms. In
practice, research implications are not finite. |
何:中国管理问题很特殊,没有标准的处理方式,每种管理情况下都应该有新的处理方式。而管理学者的研究所得都是通用的理论,仅适用于刚刚创立的企业;在实践工作中,研究的指导作用并不是完全的。 |
| Chinese firms are characterized as taking a trial and
error approach. Chinese entrepreneurs are very keen on
learning. I suggest that research institutions do not simply
transplant ideas without adaptation, for they are not
suitable for Chinese firms. Chinese and foreign firms take
different paths to grow. Chinese firms grow from the
grassroots economy, different from that which foreign firms
have gone through. Management studies should contextualize
Chinese firms. Chinese firms develop during the evolution of
planned economy. The first generation of entrepreneurs was
growing up in the process of China transforming from a
planned economy to a market economy. |
中国企业的特点是摸着石头过河,中国企业家爱学习。建议研究机构不要把国外的东西照搬过来,这样并不适合中国企业的管理实践。中国企业的成长道路与国外不一样。中国企业是从草根经济发展起来的,这是与国外企业成长经历最突出的差别。研究应该以中国企业的根基为基础展开。中国企业是在计划经济的演变过程中发展起来的。第一代企业家从计划经济向市场经济转变中成长起来,这段过程影响中国整个经济的发展。 |
| I suggest that the research focus on the growing path
and the thinking pattern of the first generation of
entrepreneurs. Take the Wenzhou mode as an example; it is
impossible to imitate because it is the way Wenzhou’s people
think that creates the Wenzhou economy and Wenzhou mode. The
thinking pattern becomes an idea. Ideas are conceptual, and
thinking is dynamic. This type of thinking pattern becomes
part of the culture. |
建议研究以第一代企业家的成长历程、思路为对象。以温州模式来说,温州模式是没有办法模仿的,它是温州人的思维方式,这种思维成为一种理念,创造了温州的经济,形成了温州模式。理是概念化的,而念是动态的,是一种文化。 |
Moreover, combining Chinese management thoughts with
western experience could better serve the Chinese economy,
but we should know Chinese management ideas first.

Zhe:
In your view, what are the implications of the current
economic crisis for Chinese firms in the future?
| 喆:您认为当前的经济危机会给中国企业带来哪些影响? |
| He:
The economic crisis has some impact on Chinese firms
following the earlier macroeconomic regulation and control.
Chinese exports are affected, but the effect will be reduced
when the domestic demand is stimulated by policies and the
focus of foreign trade policy transforms from importing to
domestic products. |
何:伴随前期中国的宏观经济调控,金融危机对中国实体经济造成一些影响。中国企业的出口受到了一定的影响,但随着国内政策对内需的拉动,以及外贸政策从进口转向国内产品,将降低对出口的不利影响。 |

The
MOR 5.1 cover image, “The bronze ox in the Summer
Palace” was painted by Chinese artist Yanhua Yu (also the
artist for MOR 4.1). In honor of the Chinese New Year, the
Ox is a symbol of prosperity achieved through
effort and determination.
The Ox is a particularly apt sign for the March 2009 issue
of MOR, which is a Special Editors’ Forum on The
Future of Chinese Management Research. While the authors of
the articles and commentaries provide varied perspectives on
Chinese management research in both the present and the
future, a clear truth emerges: for the field of Chinese
management to flourish and prosper, Chinese management
scholars must direct their hard work toward rigorous and
relevant research with perseverance.
The leading articles in MOR 5.1 explore a theory of
Chinese management compared with a Chinese theory of
management as well as the relationship of context and theory
in research. The commentaries use these articles as
platforms from which to consider other important facets of

Call for MOR 5.2 Panda Cover Image
MOR is calling on members to send photos or paintings
of the panda for the cover of the July 2009 issue. The IACMR
will be holding its biannual dissertation workshop in
Sichuan in July this year. Sichuan is the home of China’s
national treasure pandas. It is the largest panda
conservation and breeding ground for pandas. In honor of the
location and event, MOR would like a panda cover for the
July issue. We will need all panda image submission sent as
high resolution JPEG (.jpg) files to
iacmr.mor@asu.edu by
April 15, 2009.
In general, MOR is always looking for paintings and
photographs featuring unique and distinctly Chinese themes,
objects, or places to use as cover artwork for the journal.
Please remember MOR as an outlet for your original artwork. |

5.2 期以熊猫为主题的封面图片
MOR为2009年7月刊面向会员征求以熊猫为主题的照片或者绘画作品。IACMR主办的一年两次的学位论文讨论会将于7月在四川举行。四川是中国国宝熊猫的故乡。在那里有中国最大的熊猫保护和繁殖基地。为了纪念举办地和这一事件,MOR将采用熊猫主题作为7月出版的期刊的封面。我们需要各种以熊猫为主题的作品,并请在2009年4月15日前以JPEG(.jpg)格式发送到iacmr.mor@asu.edu。

| This special
issue seeks to address some of the key challenges of Chinese
management research laid out in the Editors’ Forum on “The
Future of Chinese Management Research” in the March 2009
issue of MOR. The focus of the special issue is on
empirical indigenous research addressing phenomena unique to
China, especially those that defy the prediction or
explanation by extant theories derived in the Western
contexts. We also welcome conceptual papers or inductive
theory building studies that introduce novel theoretical
insight on local phenomena that are particularly unique to
China. Papers that build universal theories by using
indigenous research approach also would be valuable
contributions to this special issue. |

quickly improve research competencies of management graduate
students? What method course should be offered to
systematically develop students to engage in empirical
research? These are concerns of management scholars that can
not be easily addressed. The IACMR timely provided a faculty
development workshop on how to teach research method in the
last day of the biennial conference. |

| The workshop
was chaired by Professor Xiao-Ping Chen. Many experienced
scholars, including Jia Lin Xie, Christopher Hsee, Kwok
Liang, Yan Zhang, Jia-Der Luo, Minping Huang, and Anne Tsui,
gave presentations on a variety of research method topics.
They were also authors of the newly published book
<Empirical methods in organization and management research>.
The book was first of its kind in China that can be used as
a textbook and gives hand-on guidance for conducting
empirical research. After presentations, participants were
divided into groups to discuss some important topics. The
workshop has provided a great platform for scholars to share
their experience on how to teach research methods. |
论坛由陈晓萍教授主持,由谢家琳、奚凯元、梁觉、张燕、罗家德、黄敏萍,徐淑英等多位资深学者分别介绍了方法课的一些重要专题。这些学者也是学会最新出版的《组织与管理的实证研究方法》的作者,该书是中国第一本可以作为教科书,并能为实证研究提供指导的方法类书籍。在精彩的报告之后,大家分组讨论与研究方法教学有关的一些重要课题。各组参与者热烈地交流了各自教学中的困惑、经验和体会。论坛在各组代表分享讨论内容之后圆满结束。 |

On June 19th,
the session in Hisbiscus hall was about “recruitment and
employability”. Dr. Xiaohua Yang (Queensland University of
Technology) chaired the session. She first invited three
speakers to present their research for twenty minutes each.
The first presenter was Professor Alan Fish, from Charles
Sturt University. His topic was “Employer’s and Students’
perceptions of Job fit in China” and his main finding was
that there were indeed some very interesting differences as
to the perceptions of the students and employers on both
skill inventories and also as to personal attributes. The
second presenter was Yiqiong Li, a PhD candidate of
University of New South Wales. She reported her research on
the problem of employers’ experiences of shortage of skilled
workers in Suzhou Industrial Park. The last presenter was
Fanmin Kong, professor of Peking University. He elaborated
on some discrimination in recruiting based on evidence from
a study conducted at Beijing’s Urban Labor Market.
After the presentation, Dr. Yang invited the discussant,
Professor Thomas Lee, a renowned scholar from University of
Washington, and the president of
Academy of Managment to offer his comments. Professor Lee’s
passion for research was felt throughout the whole hall. He
commended them for their focus on Chinese management issues
and their research methods. He emphasized that Chinese
management problems will surely be the research focus in the
future. His insightful comments generated many discussions.
Finally came the interactive session. The session theme was
so appealing and the presenters and the discussant were so
dynamic that the small Hisbiscus hall was crowded by at
least one hundred participants, with about 30 people
standing at the back. In view of work discrimination, one
audience member asked whether the Chinese government has
adopted some measures to deal with it. The large number of
lively and profound discussions showed the passion and
willingness of all participants to make the conference
successful. The audience agree that IACMR have provided a
wonderful platform to advance Chinese management research. |
6月19日上午,在花园酒店芙蓉厅举行了主题为“招聘和雇佣能力”的分会,该分会由昆士兰科技大学杨小华博士主持。她首先邀请三位主讲者分别用20分钟介绍了各自的研究发现。首先是来自查尔斯特大学的AlanFish。他的主题是中国雇主和学生对工作契合度的认知,他发现雇主和学生对于所需的就业技能以及个人特质的认知方面确实存在一定差异。第二位是新南威尔士大学的博士研究生李义琼,她提出了对苏州工业区技术工人
缺乏问题的调查和思考,最后北京大学的孔繁明教授阐述了他们基于北京市劳动市场调研所发现的招聘歧视问题。
三位主讲者报告完毕,主持人杨小华博士邀请华盛顿大学的知名教授Thomas
Lee进行点评。Thomas
Lee肯定了三位学者对中国管理问题的关注和研究,他强调中国管理问题必将成为未来研究的重点。他的深刻见解引起了大量的讨论。
最后进入听众互动提问环节。此次会议非常成功,主题富有吸引力,报告人和点评人都是学界知名的专家学者,小小的芙蓉厅挤了100多名听众,其中30多名听众是站着聆听的。关于招聘歧视问题,一名听众问到中国政府有无对此问题采取相关措施。大量生动而深刻的讨论,充分体现了所有与会者的激情,力争此次会议能够取得圆满成功。所有与会者表示,关注中国特殊情境下本土问题的研究至关重要,IACMR提供了一个如此之好的平台,必将促进中国管理管理研究的不断深入和发展。 |

”Academics in the fields of management and education often
bemoan the lack of a tight connection between theory and
practice in higher education. Despite the abundant knowledge
and expertise possessed by seasoned college administrators,
today’s higher education has been widely criticized for
being either inefficient or ineffective, or both. If we
agree that “nothing is more practical than a good theory,”
the need for new research work that provides clearer
theorybased guidance on the practice of managing college
education
clearly exists. |

Both theorists and practitioners are invited to submit
empirical or theoretical works for a special issue on
strategic management in higher education. Accepted papers
will be published on the Spring 2011 issue of International
Journal of Management in Education. Preference will be given
to empirical studies that test some hypotheses related to
increasing the competitiveness or efficiency of a certain
type of higher education institute. However, well-developed
theoretical papers with pragmatic implications for strategic
decisions made by college administrators are welcome too.
Empirical support of the theoretical hypotheses, if
appropriate, may be drawn from either primary or secondary
sources of data. Case studies that demonstrate the relevance
of the strategic management concepts in managing higher
education are welcome too. The context of research is not
restricted to North America; when it comes to the best
practices in higher education, we believe in global
benchmarking. Interdisciplinary collaboration among scholars
of differing academic backgrounds in co-authoring a paper is
encouraged. Specific topics may be chosen from, but are not
restricted to,

The 2009 Annual Conference of
the American Association for Chinese Studies will be held at
Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida, Oct. 16-18, 2009.
The American Association for Chinese Studies, founded in
1959, is the only academic society in America devoted
exclusively to the general area of Chinese studies, an
academic area for which Rollins College is distinguished.
The Association seeks participation from a
multi-disciplinary cross-section of faculty focusing on Arts
& Sciences, Humanities, as well as Social Sciences. |

The purpose of the Association
is to:
1) Encourage the study of subjects related to China,

panels, roundtables, and papers concerning China, Hong Kong,
Taiwan, and other Chinese societies for the 51th Annual
Conference of AACS, which is being hosted by Rollins
College, Orlando, Florida. Although membership in AACS is
required for participation in the Annual Meeting,
non-members are welcome to submit proposals, join the
Association and participate in the Annual Meeting. |

The program committee prefers
proposals for complete panels (a chair, 2-3 papers, and 1-2
discussants) and roundtables (a chair and 3-4 other
participants). The committee also welcomes proposals for
individual papers and will attempt to place the presenter on
an appropriate panel. We encourage submissions from graduate
students as well as junior and senior scholars, and from
overseas participants. |

As in the past, panels and
roundtables concerning special events or topics of broad
significance are especially welcome. We particularly welcome
proposals that address the impact of the US change in
presidential administration, as well as the late 2008 global
financial crisis, on Chinese societies, economies, and
polities. Too, we encourage proposals on pressures of
cultural globalization on Chinese audiences and responses.
All proposals should include short abstracts. Overall, our
goal is to construct a balanced program including panels
representing the humanities, social sciences, and
business-related disciplines. |

conference is “Leading to Global Frontiers”. The conference
aims to promote academic exchanges between international and

The 3-day conference comprises tracks in Accounting,
Finance, Management, Marketing, Ethics, International
Business, Leadership, Entrepreneurship, Strategy, Mobil
Commerce, Quality and Productivity, Cross Cultural
Management Practices, Operations & Supply Chains, and
Information Management Issues. Dr Nick Capaldi will chair a
workshop on Entrepreneur Ethics. The Keynote speakers for

Submissions, in the forms of Full Paper, Abstract or
Work-in-Progress, to the Concurrent sessions must be
received no later than March 9, 2009. Submissions, in the
form of Full Paper, to IJAIM Plenary paper sessions must be
received no later than March 2, 2009. Authors submitting for
either session can expect to be notified of the chairs’
decision by March 31, 2009. Papers not selected for IJAIM
Plenary sessions will be automatically considered for the
Concurrent paper sessions. Authors who do not wish their
papers to be considered for Concurrent paper sessions should
clearly statethis in their IJAIM Plenary papers submission. |
