Message from the President

The Engine behind IACMR's Growth: Spirit of Service

There is a well-known phenomenon in social psychology called “the over-justification effect” (Deci, 1975), when someone receives a large amount of external rewards for something he or she originally enjoys doing, his or her intrinsic motivation will decrease.  As I start to think about the people who have contributed their talent, time, effort and financial resources to the development of IACMR, I have come up with the “under-justification effect”, that is, the fewer external justifications one can find for his/her involvement in IACMR, the higher level of commitment one develops toward IACMR. I would like to call this the “the more you serve, the more you love” phenomenon.

I have been with IACMR since its conception in 2001 and witnessed its remarkable growth in the past six years: it has evolved from a 66 founding-member to an organization that has over 3000 members. We have held our inaugural conference in Beijing in 2004 and our second conference in Nanjing in 2006. We have held a Research Methods Workshop in Xi’an in 2005, a Job Search and Career Development Workshop in Atlanta in 2006, and a Dissertation Proposal Development Workshop in Guangzhou in 2007. We also have held our annual business meetings with influential scholars such as James March, Gordon Redding, Weiying Zhang, and successful practitioners such as Chuanzhi Liu (Legend), Jack Ma (Alibaba.com), and Michael Foley (UPS) as our guest speakers.  Furthermore, the association’s official journal Management and Organization Review has published 9 issues, with beautifully crafted cover pages and high quality articles that demonstrate rigor and excellence. Not to mention the Newsletter itself that has been published 8 issues. What drives the hugely successful conferences, workshops, meetings, MOR, and the Newsletter are the people—our professors, students, and colleagues in practice —who volunteered their services.  Top on this list are our executive officers, local arrangement committee members, conference program committee members, faculty advisors of workshops, awards committee members, conference paper reviewers, and our web team. It is incredible how many days and nights they have worked for the association, how much enthusiasm and excitement they have brought into the association, and how their dedication has created such a wonderful organization we all feel proud to be associated with.

The spirit of service is one of the three core values of IACMR (the other two are source of inspiration and commitment to excellence), and it is a value that creates much positive energy to society. With the spirit of service, we are able to face challenges and overcome difficulties; with the spirit of service, we live beyond fulfilling our personal needs; with the spirit of service, we become more committed to what we believe in: we will make our unique contribution to the development of knowledge in business management; and with the spirit of service, the more we serve IACMR, the more we love IACMR. I believe that this spirit of service will keep IACMR grow well into the future.

And for these reasons, I strongly encourage more of our members to get involved in the activities of the association, so that you can experience the enlightenment of the “under-justification effect”. As a result, your identification with IACMR will be stronger, and it will become part of your personal identity—in accordance with social identity theory (Tajfel, 1982).

With the preparation for our 2008 conference under way, many volunteers are working extremely hard at this moment. It has been a privilege for me to serve IACMR and work with every one of you: it is your help and support that make my job as President easy and enjoyable. Thank you!

The application process will start on November 15, 2007 and end on March 15, 2008.

IACMR 2008 Conference Caucuses: Call for Proposals

As we did in the last conference 2006, IACMR continues to have caucus sessions in the 2008 conference. Caucuses are roundtable discussions which are designed to provide a convenient, informal way for IACMR members who share a topical interest or a professional concern to find one another and to develop a sense of community. For example, if you are working on issues such as entrepreneurship and new technology ventures in China, you want to know who else (e.g., either from mainland China, Hong Kong, U.S., or other countries/regions) are interested in this topic. You would like to have a conversation with them and to know: a) who is doing what, b) what are the commonly interested issues, c) whether there are any potential opportunities for collaborations, etc.

(For the submission requirements and other detail information about the above workshops, please visit the IACMR 2008 Conference website.)

New Issue: MOR Volume 3, Issue 3 (November 2007)

Volume 3 Issue 3, November, 2007 should have arrived in your mailbox. If you are a current paid IACMR member, you can download electronic copies of the articles from Blackwell’s Synergy website.  Access is through IACMR member‘s email address (which is the login name) and password (membership number).  The issue has an exciting array of interesting research from a notable group of authors.  Soon Ang, Linn Van Dyne, Christine Koh, K. Yee Ng, Klaus J. Templer, Cheryl Tay and N. Anand Chandrasekar present an article on cultural intelligence. George Z. Peng and Paul Beamish provide a rare look into Japanese subsidiaries in China while Bat Batjargal delves into a comparison of social capital in China and Russia. and Peter Ping Li tackles the conceptualization of trust using a typological approach. To commemorate the

completion of three volumes of MOR, the editorial essay offers a brief account of the history of MOR, current status, and future challenges.  We hope you will enjoy reading this exciting issue.

MOR Library subscriptions

The most recent issue of Management and Organization Review comes with an attractive library subscription form for MOR. We encourage you to recommend MOR to your library as a great resource for your colleagues and students. MOR is indexed in most of the online publication databases, including ABI/Inform in Proquest. However, users at your university will not be able to obtain a copy of the actual articles in MOR unless your library has a subscription to MOR.  Please support your association’s journal as well as your fellow colleagues and students by filling out and forwarding this recommendation form to your university librarian.

Have not received your MOR?

If you are a current member and have not yet received your copy of Volume 3, Issue 3 via post, it is probably because your address is not accurate. Each time, our membership staff spends many HOURS updating member addresses.  We found many errors in the addresses because of mistakes made during the time you register online.  We plead for you to review your address in the online membership directory (www.iacmr.org) to ensure that it is accurate.  Please follow the instructions and type in the information as indicated on the registration page. Please do NOT type the entire address on one address line. Please do NOT use both English and Chinese. Please use all English if you reside outside of mainland China.  A wrong address means a lost issue of MOR. You don’t get it and the

money is wasted. Please update your address as often as needed. Thank you for your cooperation. If you are missing any back issues, please contact the MOR office at ASU (iacmr.mor@asu.edu) for those outside of China and IACMR office at PKU (iacmr@pku.edu.cn) for those residing in mainland China.

MOR cover image

We hope you like the cover images on the journal that we have published so far. All of them (except one or two) are creations of our members.  We thank our members for their contribution.  Please continue to think of MOR as an outlet for your artistic work by sending photographs or painting in a (.jpg) file to iacmr.mor@asu.edu.

Emerald is delighted to announce the forthcoming launch of the following new journals in 2008/2009:

Journal of Chinese Entrepreneurship (ISSN: 1756-1396)

In the age of globalisation, China presents a unique environment for organizations. The unprecedented growth of China's economy offers significant potential for both Chinese and foreign investors, and increased levels of competition in the wake of China’s entry into the WTO have resulted in experimentation and risk-taking as ways of doing business in China. The Journal of Chinese Entrepreneurship will be the first journal to focus solely on qualitative and quantitative research in all areas of China business, entrepreneurship, innovation and entrepreneurial marketing, and governmental and industrial policies that inhibit or stimulate entrepreneurship and innovation. (http://www.emeraldinsight.com /jce.htm)

Journal of Knowledge-based Innovation in China (ISSN: 1756-1418)

Developing national innovation capacities in a knowledge-based economy has become an increasingly important issue in advanced industrial and developing societies alike. China, where a stable and high growth rate has been attained in recent years, represents a unique setting for innovation theorists and economists as well as business practitioners. The Journal of Knowledge-based Innovation in China will publish critical analysis of all forms of knowledge-based innovation in China, highlighting the implications for policy and practice at international, national and regional levels.
