the President |
Commitment
to Excellence
As
we begin a new year, it is a good time to reflect
upon our aims and goals, and be clear about who we
are.
In this issue, I would like to emphasize that
IACMR, as a scholarly professional organization,
pledges to pursue EXCELLENCE in all our endeavors.
Our COMMITMENT TO EXCELLENCE statement is on
our Association website.
I have also published it in Volume 2, issue 1
of Management
and Organization Review.
In this Newsletter, I would like to highlight
the main areas of our commitment and in particular,
emphasize our professional conduct as researchers.
I
encourage you to read the entire document on www.iacmr.org
for the eight areas of responsibility that we assume
as scholars, teachers, and members of the community
to which we aspire to contribute and to make a
difference.
In fact, we should read the full document
from time to time and to practice these ideals so
they become reality and a normal way of life for
IACMR.
Below
are the abbreviated highlights of the Research Code
of Ethics.
Research
Integrity.
IACMR
members are expected to conduct research in the most
rigorous and ethical manner with integrity in using
the literature and in treating subjects and data.
Journal
Submission Policies.
IACMR
members are expected to observe the policies of the
journals to which they submit their work, including
no dual submissions and referencing to other works
using the same data set.
Respect
for Research Participants.
IACMR
members are expected to preserve and protect the
privacy, dignity, well-being, and freedom of research
participants, and confidentiality of the data.
Reviewer
and Editor Responsibilities.
IACMR
members in their role as reviewers and journal
editors are expected to maintain confidential,
unbiased, prompt, responsible, constructive, and
sensitive manner in evaluating manuscripts and in
providing feedback to authors.
Professional
Interaction and Exchange.
IACMR
members are expected to contribute to meaningful
exchanges and the sharing of research findings in a
professional manner and to rise to the professional
standards of conduct.
Conference
Participation. IACMR members are expected to attend
our biennial conferences and to present their
accepted work in person and to engage in the
intellectual exchanges of giving and receiving
feedback on a professional and equal basis.
IACMR
Member Responsibility.
IACMR members should work to raise awareness
of other members concerning social and ethical
responsibilities and notify officers or appropriate
committees of practices or actions of members that
may violate the spirit of this commitment to the
IACMR code of ethics.
With
our commitment to this code of conduct, IACMR will
be an organization that will set the standard in
integrity and whose members will be respected
throughout our global community of professional
researchers and scholars.

Conference
Caucuses
Many
IACMR members desire to have more informal
gatherings of groups for good conversation and
collaboration on research and professionals issues.
For example, if you are working on issues such as
entrepreneurship and new technology ventures in
China, you want to know who else (e.g., either from
mainland China, Hong Kong, U.S., or other
countries/regions) are interested in this topic. You
would like to have a conversation with them and to
know: a) who is doing what, b) what are the commonly
interested issues, c) whether there are any
potential opportunities for collaborations, etc.
If
that is the situation, how can the IACMR conference
help you?
The
IACMR 2006 conference in Nanjing is trying something
new! On June 18 (the last day of the conference), we
will schedule a session for caucuses. Caucuses are
roundtable discussions which are designed to provide
a convenient, informal way for IACMR members who
share a topical interest or a professional concern
to find one another and to develop a sense of
community. Caucuses can help you explore new ideas
as well as expand your academic network in an
informal, relaxed environment.
If
you are interested in organizing a caucus for the
IACMR 2006 conference, please send a proposal to
Haiyang Li, Rice University by email (haiyang@rice.edu)
or fax (1-713-348-6331). The deadline for submission
is April 1, 2006.
The
proposal can be either in English or in Chinese with
the following items included:
1)
Title of the caucus
2)
Organizer's full name and contact information
3)
A brief description of the caucus (250 words max.)
4)
Commitments from at least three other members to
participate in caucus (e-mailed commitments pasted
into caucus proposal are OK)

China
contacts needed in HR research
Petra
Bosé, student at the Open University of the
Netherlands would like contacts in China for her
thesis research on competency management for
Capricorn Incentives in Amsterdam.
The
research project on competency management in the
Netherlands, China, India and Malaysia, is motivated
by the increasing trend to hire Asian employees for
jobs in the Netherlands as well as by the growing
activities of Dutch firms in Asian countries.
Successful recruitment practices in both cases
should balance the cost perspective with quality in
terms of competencies. The research project focuses
on a comparative analysis of the competency
management methods in the four countries. To include
China in the sample, the researcher needs to get in
touch with Chinese HR managers. She will ask them to
fill in a 33-item questionnaire, taking about ten
minutes. The results of this project will be shared
with the participants.
Contact
capricornincentives@hetnet.nl
if you can help this researcher. For information on
the thesis at the Open University, please contact
the supervisor, dr. Kampermann (albert.kampermann@ou.nl).

Us Design a Netter Newsletter |
|
Our
newsletter deserves a more professional design. So,
if you have some graphical talent, and some time to
spare, please contact us (iacmr@planet.nl
) to offer your help. An improved design for the
newsletter , which will continue to be produced in
Microsoft Word and then converted to Adobe pdf as
well as made available in html, should
- use colours and symbols already used by IACMR
- be easy to use by the editors
- be comparable in terms of user friendliness and
esthetical qualities to the Academy of Management
Newsletters.
- not contain copyrighted elements
- reflect good taste and a scholarly image.
The designer should do this as a volunteer.
