2019 QJM Meeting Call for Papers




1.IACMR New Officer Election 2019

According to the Constitution and Bylaws of IACMR, a biennial election has been held in 2019 to elect positions of five officers (Vice President and four Representatives-at-Large) and two non-voting Ph.D. student representatives of the IACMR Board of Governor for the period of July 2019 - June 2022.   

The new officer election follows the procedures set in Article III Clause 2 of the IACMR Bylaws. By the nomination deadline of March 10, over 30 nominations of candidates had been received. The Nomination and Election Committee went through several rounds of thorough discussions of both the selection criteria and of the qualifications of the nominees. The committee reached a high consensus on the two candidates listed on the ballot to stand for election by the IACMR members. The invitation for vote was sent out to fee-paying members on April 10 and the online voting was kicked off. Nearly 300 active fee-paying members had casted their votes by the voting deadline of May 2. The voting results of the 2019 election are as follows.

2. Research Methods Workshop 2019

Workshop date: July 14 to 18, 2019

Location: Harbin, China (School of Management, Harbin Institute of Technology)

Working language: English and Chinese

Target candidates: Doctoral students and young faculty

Workshop format: lectures and intensive discussion sessions for developing research proposals


The Research Method Workshop is the classic program of IACMR and has been very well received since it was introduced. 120 applications were received by the submission deadline of early March. After a careful review of each proposal by the workshop committee, 105 applications were accepted. With the applicants from the host school of Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT), the admitted applicants have been formed into 12 groups to be led by the experienced faculty advisors.  The workshop reading materials  have been posted at the workshop website (full details accessible to admitted participants only). The WeChat group of the workshop participants was created in May for convenience of communications. The IACMR staff are working closely with the HIT team to make full preparations to ensure success of the workshop.


3.Updates of Inaugural Workshop on 'The Scholarship and Methods of Teaching' 

To accomplish IACMR Mission that seeks to 'advance the science, education and practice of Chinese management', the IACMR board decided to launch a new program of 'The Scholarship of Teaching Workshop', starting from 2019. The purpose of this workshop is to help those IACMR members with a passion to education become excellent teachers, thus help advance the quality of management education in China . This workshop is designed for faculty members with at least two years' of teaching experience in the field of management. 

Forty selected applicants will attend the first workshop to be held at the Xi'an Campus of Guanghua School of Management on July 20 -22. Professor Neng Liang, IACMR immediate past president and the workshop organizer, will be joined by the following very experienced professors to give lectures on the scholarship and methods of teaching and share their rich teaching experience: Runtian Jing from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Xuhong Li from Fudan University, Jia Lin Xie from the University of Toronto and Zhi-Xue Zhang from Peking University. 

The workshop schedule and the list of reading materials have been posted at the workshop website (full details accessible to admitted participants only) for preview and preparations. The workshop participants have started chatting in the WeChat group set up in May. Everyone is looking forward to experience sharing and wonderful lecturing by the five professors.

4.Kwok Leung Memorial Dissertation Fund -Grant Winners 2019

The Kwok Leung Memorial Dissertation Fund was created to commemorate the life and work of Professor Kwok Leung, and to continue his mission of supporting young scholars. The fund is intended to support Ph.D. students who need funds to collect data to finish their dissertations. The fund is open to all doctoral students doing Chinese Management research.


It's the 4th year to invite proposals for the fund grant. The Call for Proposals was announced on March 21, 2019. By the submission deadline of April 30, 2019, 22 valid proposals had been received from students of 18 universities (alphabetically) Curtin University, Fudan University, IESE Business School, Lingnan University, Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Nanyang Technological University, Ohio State University, Singapore Management University, National University of Singapore, Peking University, Renmin University of China, University of Illinois at Chicago, University of Liverpool, University of Maryland, University of Minnesota, University of Nottingham Ningbo China and Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University.


The IACMR Research Committee members, co-chaired by David Zhu (Arizona State University) and Jia (Jasmine) Hu (The Ohio State University), reviewed and assessed the submitted proposals, each of which received two reviews. The following five proposals (listed in alphabetical order of the authors' last name) received the highest ratings and have won Kwok Leung Memorial Dissertation Fund grants.

5. IACMR Events at AoM 2019

As usual, IACMR takes the opportunity of scholars gathering at the AoM annual meeting to organize a series of IACMR events this year at Boston. The following events are scheduled on Sunday, Aug. 11th, 2019. All IACMR members are welcome to join us for food, wine, and friendship!


Event 1: IACMR-RRBM Responsible Research in Management Award Ceremony

Time: 4:30 – 6:00pm

Location: Sheraton Boston Hotel, Independence West Room


This award recognizes scholarship that focuses on important issues for business and society, using sound research methods. A full description of the award and the ceremony can be seen HERE. Both this year's and last year's winners will be honored at the ceremony. Several winners will discuss their research during the ceremony, and be available to answer your questions. We hope that this award encourages more work that is both high in social impact and backed by strong research.


Event 2: IACMR Business Meeting

Time: 6:00 – 6:30pm

Location: Sheraton Boston Hotel, Independence West Room


The meeting is to present the latest developments of the association, including updates on the biennial conferences, our journal (MOR), and the results of the officer election. IACMR members are welcome to provide feedback and suggestions on IACMR development.  


During this meeting, we will recognize winners of the Kwok Leung Dissertation Award, which supports doctoral student dissertations and helps preserve the member of Professor Leung, who cared so deeply about doctoral education.


Event 3: IACMR/MOR/GSM Joint Reception

Time: 6:30 – 8:00 pm

Location: Sheraton Boston Hotel, Room: Back Bay Ballroom D


IACMR/MOR and the host schools of the IACMR biennial conference will sponsor a joint reception. Guanghua School of Management, Peking University and Xi'an Jiaotong University, as the host schools of the 2020 IACMR Conference, will join us at the reception to welcome you to the Xi'an conference in 2020.


6.The Fourth Teacher Training Workshop for the "Philosophy of Management Research" course Call for Applications


This Teacher Training workshop is to prepare faculty colleagues to teach and promote the Philosophy of Management Research (PMR) course. This PMR course, which has been offered for four years at a few leading business schools in Mainland China and Hong Kong, is to introduce doctoral students to the nature of scientific work in organizations and management. It focuses on a few of the key issues relating to the philosophy of science and the principles of scientific research. The 4th workshop is to be held in the Hong Kong Baptist University.


Date: December 5, Thursday 5 pm to December 9, Monday 5 pm (4.5 days)
