Call for input for the new IACMR newsletter

In the last few years, we have circulated announcements and relevant news by e-mail. Until now this has been functioning quite well, but it is time for a more professional and structured approach as the IACMR is growing and its agenda is developing.

A quarterly electronic Newsletter will replace the e-mails starting this autumn. Its planned publication date is November 15, 2005. Each newsletter may contain information under at least the following headings:

- 'From The President'
- IACMR News: announcements: conferences, workshops and other activities; calls for papers.
- IACMR Member News: reports  (like conferences and workshops);
- What Others Do: announcements of activities by other organizations in the field of Chinese Management Research which may be of interest to members
- Research Market:  announcements from individual IACMR members on their current researches, calls for information and collaborations, etc.
- Job Market: announcements of position openings and visiting opportunities; brief bios of members seeking permanent or visiting positions
- Member Publications: articles or books published by IACMR members
- MOR News: new issues, call for papers for special issues, etc.

In principle all input from members is welcome, if it contributes to the objectives of the IACMR. Input is welcome in both English and Chinese. The newsletter will offer all information in both languages.

Dr. Huibert de Man, professor of Organization and Human Resources at the Maastricht School of Management and the Open University of the Netherlands has offered to act as an editor for the English version. He will work in close co-operation with Mrs. Jie Gui (Gui is her family name)-- a PhD student at Beijing Institute of Technology, who will  do the necessary translation work. They expect to need a few issues to develop the definitive form of the Newsletter.

The Newsletter will only work with your input. Please send it in English or Chinese, as part of an email or as an attachment in Microsoft Word, to Winee Wu at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology:
mnwinee@ust.hk

Winee will see that your contribution be processed. Please send your contributions between Oct. 15 and Oct. 30, and we will try our best to publish our Newsletter around November 15. It will be distributed as a pdf-file attached to an email and it will also be made available on the IACMR website at this page
.

Thank you for your continuous support!

A case recently written by Michael Young Donald Liu titled “Hong Kong Disneyland,” Ivey Publishing, 2007

Michael Young, Associate Professor, Department of Management, Hong Kong Baptist University
Dong LIU (Donald), PhD Student, Department of Management and Organization Department, University of Washington

Abstract:
Disney began internationalizing its theme park operations with the
opening of Tokyo Disneyland in 1983, which his regarded as one of the
most successful amusement parks in the world. Disney attempted to
replicate this succession in France, which is the largest consumer of
Disney products outside of the US. In 1992, they opened Disneyland
Resort Paris, which is largely regarded to be much less successful than
the park in Japan. One explanation for the difference in results may be
due to the way that Disney's strategic assets - such as products,
practices and ideologies - were translated to and interpreted in the
Japanese and French contexts. This is a process that Brennan (2004)
calls recontextualization. This case explores Disney's efforts to open
its third park outside of the US, Hong Kong Disneyland. This case begins
by discussing the experiences of Tokyo and Paris Disneylands, and then
discusses the opening of Hong Kong Disneyland, including the structure
of the deal, and how the operations, HRM and marketing were tailored to
fit the Chinese cultural environment. The case also discusses the
tourism industry in Hong Kong and the particular problems that were
encountered during the first year of operations. The stage is set for
students to discus whether Disney's strategic assets have a good
semantic fit with Chinese culture.

Two new books by Yasheng Huang and Oded Shenkar

Selling China: Foreign Direct Investment During the Reform Era
by Yasheng Huang, William Kirby, Cambridge University Press 2003

China is one of the most popular investment destinations in the world. For
a number of years in the 1990s, China was the second largest recipient of
foreign direct investment (FDI) in the world. Many hail Chinas large FDI
absorption as a celebrated achievement of reforms. The central claim of
this book is that the large absorption of FDI by China is a sign of some
substantial weaknesses in its economy. FDI inflows into China surged in the
1990s because domestic firms were uncompetitive and they failed to
capitalize on new business opportunities. Foreign firms responded by
investing in China. Chinas partial reforms, while successful in increasing
the scope of the market, have so far failed to address many allocative
inefficiencies in the Chinese economy.

The Chinese Century
by
Oded Shenkar, Wharton Publishing 2004

The book assesses the impact of a rising China on the global economy on nations, businesses, consumers and employees in the coming decades. The author views China’s ascent as equivalent to the rise of the United States as a major economic and political power a century ago and addresses the challenges posed by the Chinese advance to current business models.
